The Impact of Unemployment on Deviant Behavior among Youth in Iraqi Society: A Sociological Study
Abstract
General Background: Unemployment is a persistent global issue affecting both developed and developing economies, posing serious economic and social challenges. It is recognized as a primary factor influencing social instability and crime rates. Specific Background: In Iraqi society, youth unemployment has become a pressing concern, particularly among graduates, leading to an increased prevalence of deviant behaviors. The lack of job opportunities, economic instability, and weak institutional responses exacerbate the issue. Knowledge Gap: While previous studies have examined the relationship between unemployment and crime, limited research has specifically explored how unemployment contributes to deviant behaviors among Iraqi youth, highlighting a need for a sociological investigation. Aims: This study aims to assess the impact of unemployment on deviant behaviors among Iraqi youth, identify the most common forms of deviant behavior, and analyze the social and economic factors contributing to these behaviors. Results: The findings reveal a significant correlation between unemployment and the spread of deviant behaviors, with a general mean of 3.701. Key deviant behaviors identified include increased social aggression, participation in unlawful activities, and weakened adherence to social norms. Novelty: Unlike previous studies, this research focuses specifically on youth in Iraqi society and offers a comprehensive sociological perspective on the issue, integrating various theoretical frameworks to explain the phenomenon. Implications: The study suggests urgent policy interventions, including job creation initiatives, vocational training programs, and economic reforms to mitigate youth unemployment and reduce its impact on social stability.
